We design and conduct epidemiological studies, with services ranging from scientific literature searches to the feasibility study/pilot phase to the principle study.Reference projects (German only) Risk assessment Our scientific, evidence-based risk assessments and consultation services are based on the following:
Consultation servicesWe offer consultation services for epidemiology-related statistical questions, and work with other research institutes to coordinate and monitor epidemiological and toxicological studies.
The instituteEvonik operates the IERA as an independent, scientific institution that the company makes available to the University of Cologne for free as part of a joint agreement. An important distinguishing feature of the business model used by the Institute for Occupational Epidemiology and Risk Assessment is collaboration between the IERA, which is affiliated with Evonik Industries AG, and the Institut und Poliklinik für Arbeitsmedizin, Umweltmedizin und Präventionsforschung (a research clinic for occupational and public health) at the Cologne University Hospital. The relationship is the result of a public-private partnershipand represents a win-win situation for both parties. The University of Cologne, in turn, supports the scientific work carried out by the IERA with an emphasis on independent research and teaching. In addition, the research clinic also serves as an expert partner and interface for the joint venture at no charge. This collaborative project in occupational epidemiology advances scientific progress of research and teaching in the field and uses scientifically grounded methods to help answer questions arising at Evonik. The IERA business model focuses on extrapolating environmental and workplace threshold values and on classifying the carcinogenic effects of materials. These activities are carried out on a national and international level by independent panels of scientific experts. Its affiliation with the University makes the Institute an independent, scientific authority for interpreting data relevant to establishing threshold values and assessing materials. In this way, the IERA makes complementary, high-end contributions to establishing thresholds/material assessment.
